Sapa is about 380km from Hanoi in the north west of Vietnam. It is a former French hill station situated in the valley near the Chinese border. Sapa’s high elevation of 1600 meters creates its cool climate. This inspired the French to build villas there as a summer retreat. Today, it attracts visitors for its stunning scenery, comfortable climate, colorful tradition markets and a variety of ethnic hill tribes. Sapa has fascinated numerous travelers cause this is a perfect place for relaxing, exploring culture and Hill tribe’s traditional lifestyle, adventurous trekking with breathtaking sceneries.
When to go
The best time is between Septembers to December.. From March to Jun is also excellent time as it is not so cold and the flowers all brilliantly blossoms but rains intensify from June onwards. During winter time January to February temperature is regularly around 0ºC and there is snow sometime.
How to get there?
There are 2 ways to go to Sapa:
By coach: Catch public coach from Hanoi to Lao Cai city then catch another coach to Sapa town. However, this is not recommended due to dangerous terrain in Sapa.
By train: Catching a night train is the most common way to go. Many night trains leave Hanoi around 8-10pm and reach Lao Cai train station around 4-6Am in the next day. From Lao Cai train station, catch a public bus or book a private car in advance to Sapa (book private picking up car and guide from your travel agent). To make it safe and convenient, most of tourist book train ticket and also picking up car and guide from Lao Cai train station through a tour organizer or travel agents.
